Netsafe Schools Tiers

The Netsafe Schools programme comprises three tiers. These tiers act as signposts to guide a school’s progress and illustrate their growth in online safety competencies. The tiers are:

  1. Beginning – Te Kākano: This tier reflects a commitment to creating a safer online learning environment.
  2. Growing – Tipu ma toro: This tier reflects a pro-active approach to online safety, citizenship and wellbeing initiatives.
  3. Mature – Te Puāwaitanga: These schools have met the Growing – Tipu ma toro expectations and are willing to share their practices to help other schools and kura. Schools can nominate themselves here and Netsafe will announce the recipients twice a year.

Any school or kura that completes the Netsafe Schools Review Tool automatically becomes a Netsafe School, with the outcomes from the review determining the tier accreditation.

FAQs

How can I move to the next tier?
The Netsafe Schools Planner enables you to select the areas you identify as online safety priorities and then directs you to the actions that will influence positive change. When you’re comfortable you’ve implemented the changes in your plan, you can undertake another Netsafe Schools Review to assess your progress and potentially reach the next tier.

How long will I remain at the tier I’m assigned to after the Netsafe Schools Review Tool?
A school is assigned to this tier for a year, however schools can complete a Netsafe School Review at any time to reflect significant changes in their online safety practice which may have an impact on their tier status. Netsafe will provide schools with a review of their current tier status every 3 months.

What happens if I don’t complete a new Netsafe Schools Review at the end of the year?
The Netsafe Schools membership will last for a year from the time a school completes a Netsafe Schools Review. A school will need to undertake a new Netsafe Schools Review to retain their tier status.

What happens if I complete a Netsafe Schools Review Tool in the middle of the year?
The Netsafe Schools membership will last for a year from the time a school completes a Netsafe Schools Review. A school will be able to access their Netsafe Schools badge with the year they qualify on it and one for the duration of their membership for the next year.
