Netsafe developed the 'online treaty' to support all kids and their whānau to have a safe and positive time while using the internet and devices. The treaty helps families agree on some guidelines and helps to keep online safety front of mind.
Last Updated30/07/2024
The treaty helps young people have better online experiences and enables parents to have ongoing conversations about the ways to stay safe, what it means to your family and where your child will go in case something goes wrong online.
It is important parents feel confident having ongoing conversations with their child about their online activities, as these conversations have been proven to minimise the harm that may occur if things do go wrong online.
When you’re putting together a treaty, try to make sure everyone contributes. Spend some time talking to your child about what being online means in your family and the kinds of choices that you want them to make.
We have created three versions of the treaty to work with different age groups.
Read through each one to ensure the language is at an appropriate level for your children before talking them through it.
